Sunshine Cleaning
I was really hoping this movie would be full of more joking than it was. Instead it was a story about two sisters and their struggles. It was a nice movie, not as funny as I had hoped and it was more of a serious movie. It was interesting dynamic between the older sister and her younger never-do-right sister. They lost their mother when both were young and were left for their father to raise them. The eldest sister has a son and is in a relationship with a married man.
They start a crime scene cleanup company and learn quickly that there are strict regulations on disposals. Of course the younger sister causes the company to go under. Can the sisters rebuild their relationship? Of course they can and thats why this movie ends up a B.

Cashback
British movies are very odd. This one was no exception. This one was confusing, had some humorous parts, lots of gratuitous nudity when he "freezes" time in order to draw the female form. Some where in here there was a love story as well. Not really a good movie. I have to give it a D+.

The Life of David Gale
This movie came highly recommended to me. I have discussed the problems with high expectations before. This movie fell into that same trap. I think there was a very good movie locked in here but I felt deflated when I figured out the plot less than a 1/3 of the way through the movie. The transparency of the plot was alarming. It felt like too much was spelled out ahead of the revealing final of the movie.
I did enjoy the movie and thought the idea of the movie and plot was very good. What I did not fully understand was the emotional connect that Kate Winslet's character Bitsey Bloom felt with David Gale. She ends the movie sobbing when she is unable to prevent the death of Gale. I still can't figure out why she was so upset when she started the movie fully convinced he was a murderer. Was it solely because she felt she could have prevented the death? Did she not see that he wanted to make a martyr of himself? Maybe it was not as obvious to her character as it was to the movie viewer but still when she figured the truth of the story why did she not see that he may have been a lead character in the plot?
Frustrating to watch her tear herself apart. I do give the movie a B+ because the plot was good underneath some overbearing points that spelled out the plot too much for my liking.

SLC Punk
I wasn't a huge Matthew Lillard fan going into this movie and nothing about it made me change my mind.
The movie was set in 1980's Salt Lake City. Lillard is a punk raised by Yuppies in the repressive state that is Utah. I was really bored during this movie. I kept waiting for something, anything to happen. I'm not real sure what this movie was supposed to be about. It just kept introducing people and circling around.
Lillard had monologue after monologue and I must have just missed the point of the movie. I mean at the end of the movie Lillard eventually decided to abandon the punk way and go to Harvard Business school. He did point out that becoming punk was actually his way to fit in and his rebelliousness was actually an act of conformity. If he wanted to create chaos he could do it within the system.
I think. Like I said I had a hard time paying attention to this movie. C movie at best.

Dan in Real Life
This movie came very highly recommended to me. This movie was not as laugh out loud funny as I thought it was going to be. I had expected a movie similar to 40 year old virgin, not another Little Miss Sunshine. It really doesn't even have many funny parts but the story it tells is a nice story.
The story revolves around Dan, an advice columnist, and his three daughters. After his wife died four years ago he was left to raise his now 17, 15 and 4 year old daughters. They go to the family's cabin in Rhode Island and spend the time with the entire family, his 2 brothers, 1 sister and their children. In the morning Dan's mother insists that Dan goes out to fetch a newspapers. While Dan is out he meets a woman and falls in love. Of course there is an obstacle. Unfortunately she's on her way to meet up with Dan's brother whom she has been dating.
Sure enough Dan overcomes this, falls in love and regains his daughters love as well. A happy ending for everyone. It's a nice, sappy movie and pretty much what you expect from a PG-13 movie. A B- for this nice family movie.
